The Adventures Traveler welcomes you to Bhutan, "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and home to a variety of large mammals and numerous species of birds. Bhutan is a tiny independent country, about the same size as Switzerland. The Bhutanese people have worked hard to stay independent and unexploited, allowing only 5000 tourists within its borders each year, along with restrictions like; groups must be 4 or more and you are only allowed to use a Bhutanese run tour company while in Bhutan with set government prices. The integrity of this small country leaves one to wonder if they have actually stepped back in time, living in another era, a true Shangri-La. Your trip will start in Kathmandu, Nepal. Upon arrival our Nepali staff will meet you at the airport. While in Kathmandu our group will stay at the Yak & Yeti Hotel, known as the most luxurious hotel in all Nepal. On the first night you'll enjoy an AT welcome dinner. This is a great way to get acquainted before the adventure begins. Your time in Kathmandu will be spent with a Nepalese bird naturalist exploring the local areas that many of Nepal's birds call home. Our group will also visit a few of the many Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries. On day 3 our group will take the short flight to Paro, Bhutan's only airport. After landing we'll take the 45-minute drive to Thimphu with some afternoon free time for self-exploration. The next morning we'll head by vehicle with a Bhutanese bird watching guide, to a local oak forest just below the Cheri Monastery for our first glimpse of why you're here, BIRDS! Some birds you'll spot; Spotted Laughing Thrust, Fire-capped Tit, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker and in winter the Maroon-backed Accentor. The rest of your tour in Bhutan will take you to warm broad leaf forests with White-bellied heron (rare), White-gorgeted fly-catcher (rare) and Yellow-vented warbler, along with a drive to Phubjika valley where Japanese Quail, Black-necked crane can be seen, then visiting Fir, Rhododendron, Oak and Bamboo forest viewing the wide variety of birds found here.
