Gokyo Lakes
w/Incredible
Views of Mount Everest
Optional Non-Technical Hike Up
Gokyo Ri (18,300 ft.)

4 Nights Kathmandu/13 Days trekking within the Sagarmatha National Park
NEPAL

Here at The Adventurous Trekker, we understand that seeing Mount Everest is one of the main reasons many people visit Nepal. The majority of people believe that to really see Everest you need to head toward the base camp, when actually you can get better views from Goyko Ri (18,300-ft) and Machhermo Ri (17,500-ft). So we invite you to view Mount Everest from a different perspective, from the Gokyo Lakes area. The Gokyo Lakes valley is located 20 miles (as the crow flies) from the summit of Mount Everest and will reward you with views that surpass just about any in the Himalayas.

You will be greeted upon arrival in Kathmandu and will spend the next day on a guided sightseeing tour of the many Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples. Our goal today is to give you some background and insight to the culture and people that live in this very isolated country.

Your trek will start on day 3 with the short flight to Lukla (9,300-ft), the staging ground for all treks to this area of Nepal. The beginning of this trek is the same as hiking to Everest Base Camp. On the way, we'll stay two nights in the village of Namche Bazaar to acclimatize. Namche is considered the trading center for the Khumbu region, and people walk from as far away as Tibet every Saturday to sell their wares here. This is also the hub onto which each trail converges, so yaks and people compete for space in this amphitheater style city.

After an exciting visit to the Tengboche monastery, we'll head up the valley leaving the usual Everest trail and following the rivers run off from the Ngozumpa glacier. After two days we will stop again in the village of Machhermo for another rest day and the chance to hike up Machhermo Ri. Our Next stop will be the Gokyo Valley.

Your arrival into this high mountain valley called Gokyo is welcomed by a string of cobalt blue lakes that continue for the 3 hour hike to Gokyo Village, which sits at the foot of Gokyo Ri (18,300 ft). The next morning, you're invited to take the 3-hour hike to the summit of this black, rocky mound to witness the 360-degree Himalayan view offered only from this vantage point. The Himalayas stand like giants guarding the border into Tibet. From Gokyo Ri you'll see much more than Mount Everest -- there are magnificent views of many of the other 8000 meter peaks from here as well.

Once finished, we'll retrace our path but instead of crossing back over to Tengboche Monastery we'll head back to Namche for the night. The next morning we will stop in Phakding for lunch before heading back to Lukla and the flight to Kathmandu.

Usually our flight from Lukla to Kathmandu will arrive by noon and you will have that afternoon and another full day to finish shopping and sightseeing. On your last night in Kathmandu we usually get the group back together for one last dinner.

After breakfast on your final morning, everyone will be escorted back to the airport for departure.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL WITH THE ADVENTUROUS TREKKER:

01) We pay our staff fair wages (almost always higher than our competitors), and make sure they have appropriate clothing for the area we're traveling to. We adhere to the pay scale and treatment rules outlined by the nonprofit watchdog group Porters Progress.

02) Each group is equipped with a state-of-the-art water purifier, instead of taking the chance with boiled water.

03) Our pricing is inclusive, that means you pay one price which includes virtually everything (for exceptions, see the "What isn't Included" list in the left column.

04) We can arrange discounted international airfare, at no extra charge.

05) The right staff can make all the difference in your trek. Our staff is incredibly dedicated, most of them have been working with us for six to eight years. All of our Nepalese guides are highly trained to understand western standards and needs. They have all been trained and certified as professional guides by the Nepalese Government.

06) Safety is our first concern. That is why we keep our group sizes small, so no one who may not be feeling their best gets overlooked. We always bring enough staff to assure that if you're not feeling well, you'll be assigned a highly trained person to stay with you and attend to your needs. We never leave our members alone during a trek. If at any time you don't feel up to continuing with the group, you'll be kept comfortable and safe by your assigned staffmember, and either catch up when you can or we'll try to meet you on the return trip. You will never be left alone and unattended on an Adventurous Trekker trek.
